Ministry, Indosat, Mastercard Launch Cybersecurity Online Academy

Tue, 17th Sep 2024

The Ministry of Communications and Informatics Indonesia (Kominfo) has announced a strategic partnership with Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison (Indosat or IOH) and Mastercard Indonesia to launch an online academy aimed at enhancing cybersecurity awareness among 1 million Indonesians. This initiative represents a significant step forward in Indonesia's ambition to transition into a global digital economy.

The programme will leverage the Ministry's existing Digital Talent Scholarship (DTS) platform to offer foundational knowledge and practical skills in cybersecurity. It is designed to serve both individuals and small businesses, enabling them to better protect themselves in an increasingly digitised world. Additionally, the initiative will aim to increase Indonesia's cybersecurity capabilities by developing both existing professionals and emerging talent to expand the pool of cybersecurity specialists.

The contribution of both Indosat and Mastercard will be critical to the success of this initiative. Indosat will utilise its experience in digital talent development, while Mastercard will offer its expertise in cybersecurity solutions and training, having delivered similar projects in various markets across Asia Pacific and globally.

Participants in this DTS programme will gain essential skills relevant to the digital economy. This includes secure management of devices, apps, and accounts, understanding software updates and security measures, protection against phishing and malware, and methods for securing business data with backups. The initiative aims to not only support Indonesia's digital economy within Southeast Asia but also to bolster the country's position on the global stage.

Minister of Communications and Informatics of the Republic of Indonesia, Budi Arie Setiadi, remarked, "This partnership marks a significant milestone in Indonesia's digital development. We are committed to building a secure and resilient digital ecosystem, and cybersecurity is a crucial part of this mission. By joining forces with Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison and Mastercard, we are laying a strong foundation to prepare Indonesia's digital talent for the challenges ahead."

Vikram Sinha, President Director and CEO of Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison, expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration. "At Indosat, we believe that digital talent is the backbone of Indonesia's future. Being trusted by the Ministry of Communications and Informatics to support this groundbreaking initiative is a responsibility we proudly embrace. Together with Mastercard, we are committed to accelerating Indonesia's journey toward becoming a digitally advanced and secure nation, ready to compete on a global scale. With this landmark initiative, we believe Indosat are closer to fulfilling its larger purpose of empowering Indonesia," he said.

Aileen Goh, Country Manager and President Director for Indonesia at Mastercard, highlighted the necessity of addressing cybersecurity threats. She noted, "As the digital economy continues to grow, so does the frequency and extent of cyberattacks. Cybercrimes are projected to cost the world about USD $13.8 trillion by 2028. Besides the increase in vulnerabilities, a recent global survey revealed that 72 per cent of cyberattacks in Asia stem from the shortage of skilled specialists in the field. Capacity building and nurturing a pipeline of cybersecurity talent is therefore key to ensuring cyber resilience and a safe and secure digital economy. Mastercard is pleased to contribute to this important initiative alongside Indosat and the Ministry of Communications and Informatics. This collaboration will equip Indonesia's talents with the essential skills, knowledge, and expertise necessary to prepare for future threats and bolster trust in the digital economy, thereby safeguarding Indonesia's digital future."

The collaboration, part of the Cybersecurity Centre of Excellence launched by Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison and Mastercard in April 2024, underscores a shared commitment to empowering Indonesia's digital workforce and enhancing the nation's standing in the global digital economy. This initiative sets a new benchmark for cybersecurity training and serves as a model for future digital talent development programmes in Indonesia.
