StarHub & Singapore Police launch campaign to combat scams
StarHub has partnered with the Singapore Police Force (SPF) to launch a public education campaign aimed at combating the increasing prevalence of scams in Singapore. The initiative, which includes a series of Scam Masterclasses, is designed to educate the public on the evolving nature of cyber threats.
According to the SPF's Scams and Cybercrime Brief for 2023, scam cases in Singapore have risen by 46.8%, from 31,728 in 2022 to 46,563 in 2023. In response to this marked increase, the Scam Masterclasses will cover common scams that have affected many residents. These educational videos aim to empower viewers with essential knowledge and practical tools to help them outsmart scammers, contributing to a more secure digital landscape.
"StarHub is deeply invested in the security and well-being of our community," said Hoo Chuan-Wei, Chief Information Security Officer at StarHub. "Our commitment goes beyond merely safeguarding data; it's about fortifying the digital landscape to protect every individual. This cybersecurity campaign reflects our dedication to empowering Singaporeans with critical awareness and insights to effectively combat scams and cyber threats. Through this campaign, we hope to play our part in cultivating a more vigilant and resilient digital community."
The comprehensive Masterclass series leverages SPF's expertise in cybercrime and includes content that reflects the latest scams and cyber threats, such as the use of voice-changing AI technology. Each session features an ethical hacker who reveals common tactics used in impersonation, job, and authority scams. This practical approach aims to make it easier for individuals to recognise warning signs and protect themselves from falling victim to such schemes.
Senior Assistant Commissioner of Police Devrajan Bala, Director of the Scam Public Education Office (SPEO) in the Singapore Police Force, emphasised the importance of ongoing vigilance. "All of us must be prepared that scams and cybercrimes will continue to evolve, and we may encounter them anytime. We must not let our guard down and always remain vigilant in our fight against them. One simple way is to always Stop and Check if it's a scam whenever in doubt. The Singapore Police Force will continue to work closely with our partners and stakeholders to educate the public on the various types of scams and cybercrimes to safeguard our community."
The Masterclasses will be accessible through various platforms to maximise reach. They will be available on StarHub's website, in its retail stores, and through YouTube, Instagram, and Facebook channels belonging to both StarHub and SPF. Additionally, the videos will be aired on popular StarHub TV channels such as Hub E City, Hub Sports, and AXN. By using these diverse platforms, StarHub and SPF aim to provide as many people as possible with the knowledge needed to recognise and combat cyber threats.
As the surge in scam cases continues to affect residents, both StarHub and the Singapore Police Force believe that public education and awareness are critical components in the fight against cybercrime. Organisers hope that these Masterclasses will make a significant impact by empowering individuals to be vigilant and informed, thereby creating a safer digital environment for all.
