SonicWall launches TZ80 firewall to simplify small office security
SonicWall has launched the TZ80 firewall, aimed at addressing the growing security requirements of small offices, home offices, rural broadband providers, and other distributed or temporary workplaces as the complexity of modern networks increases. The launch targets organisations seeking straightforward management without compromising network protection or speed.
Security landscape
Network security practices are shifting, fueled by expanding hybrid workforces, the proliferation of IoT devices, and a growing reliance on cloud applications. Managing security policies across multiple network environments has grown more complex. The traditional network perimeters have eroded as remote access and cloud computing blur boundaries, while a majority of internet traffic is now encrypted, complicating threat detection.
Product overview
The TZ80 offers up to 750 Mbps firewall throughput and support for as many as 300,000 concurrent connections. It supports up to 10,000 SSL-inspected connections, which the company says is suited to high-demand deployments. The firewall is positioned for small businesses and organisations that require enterprise-level protection, including healthcare, legal, hospitality, and education sectors, but without the resource demands of more complex solutions. The device also aims to serve use cases in rural broadband, event networking, and IoT deployments where scale, performance, and flexibility are required.
Core features
The firewall's core functions include intrusion prevention, DNS filtering, and advanced threat protection. Additional capabilities such as a fibre SFP port enhance connectivity in regions where fibre infrastructure is expanding. Zero-touch deployment aims to accelerate installation and configuration, useful for both temporary events and permanent office setups. Network administrators may manage the TZ80 devices and their associated security policies remotely via SonicWall's Network Security Manager (NSM), enabling oversight of distributed fleets of devices from a single management interface.
Deployment cases
The TZ80 is designed for small business environments such as local retail, boutique law offices, and remote workers requiring secure connections to corporate networks. For rural communities, it is positioned as a solution to protect IoT devices and local networks as rural broadband expands. Its SD-WAN optimisation features are targeted at environments with numerous IoT endpoints and homes implementing smart devices, where both performance and resilience are needed. Event networks-such as those supporting conferences or concert venues-are identified as temporary but high-pressure environments where rapid deployment is prioritised.
Management enhancements
New management conveniences include device-specific configuration templates, which can be leveraged to streamline implementations across locations such as school districts. Features such as auto-sync ensure that local policy changes are automatically reflected in the cloud-based management interface. Enhanced logging and audit trails in NSM give administrators increased visibility over device activities.
Licensing flexibility
The TZ80 offers subscription-based licensing with several packages. Secure Connect provides SD-WAN and cloud security features. Advanced Protection includes an expanded suite of security services and reporting tools, while Managed Protection offers outsourced firewall administration with round-the-clock support. Licences are available across terms of one, three, or five years, with extended reporting retention of up to 365 days for analytics needs.
"The SonicWall TZ80 is a game-changer for small businesses and organisations needing enterprise-grade security in an affordable, easy-to-manage package. It addresses today's complex network environments-whether you're running a small business in urban Texas, providing secure access for remote workers in Silicon Valley, or offering high-speed connectivity in rural America. The TZ80 stands out as a long-term solution built for evolving needs. It simplifies network management and future-proofs your security infrastructure," said Jose Correa, Product Marketing Specialist, SonicWall.
