NetApp enhances IT infrastructure for Semyung University

Thu, 5th Sep 2024

NetApp has partnered with Semyung University and IT service specialist KL Information & Communication to introduce its storage solutions aimed at addressing the university's IT infrastructure issues.

The collaboration comes following challenges faced by Semyung University due to system failures and insufficient storage space stemming from outdated information systems and infrastructure. Additionally, there was a need to improve the data backup system and establish a rapid and stable recovery system in response to increasing cyber threats.

To tackle these issues, NetApp introduced its FAS storage system and related solutions at Semyung University in collaboration with KL Information & Communication. This included the adoption of NetApp FAS8300 and MetroCluster solutions, which ensure seamless data protection and security services even in the event of unexpected physical storage interruptions. A remote FAS2820 disaster recovery system was also established using SnapMirror to prepare for catastrophic events and data emergencies.

Moreover, NetApp implemented its ONTAP Autonomous Ransomware Protection feature, which automatically detects and generates snapshots in the event of ransomware encryption. SnapRestore was also integrated, allowing for instantaneous point-in-time recovery. Additionally, a backup system utilising SnapVault was constructed to handle various data failures. Following the implementation of these solutions, Semyung University saw a threefold improvement in the performance of its academic administration system, and its data storage capacity doubled.

The ability to operate uninterrupted, facilitated by MetroCluster over IP networks, has alleviated the university's operational burden and significantly enhanced productivity. The highly-resilient storage technology ensures that the university can provide normal services during data failures, thus improving its resilience against cyber threats, while offering an efficient working environment and improved educational conditions for faculty and students.

Dong-Hyun Kwon, President of Semyung University, highlighted the significant improvements realised through the implementation. "Our university's IT infrastructure has been significantly improved thanks to NetApp's solutions. The partnership with NetApp and KL Information & Communication has allowed us to simplify our complex backup environment by consolidating it with a single vendor," he stated. Kwon also expressed hope for continuing collaboration with NetApp on future advanced infrastructure projects, including video lectures and remote classes.

Min-Chul Jeong, Team Leader of KL Information & Communications, also noted the positive impact of the collaborative efforts. "We are very pleased to provide Semyung University with a stable and efficient IT solution through close cooperation with NetApp. The newly implemented solutions will greatly enhance the university's academic operations and research environment. We will continue to support Semyung University's ongoing development in collaboration with NetApp," Jeong stated.

Henry Kho, Area Vice President and General Manager for Greater China, ASEAN, and South Korea at NetApp, reiterated NetApp's commitment to innovation in IT infrastructure.

"We are proud to bring positive changes to Semyung University's academic operations and research environment through this solution implementation. NetApp's high-performance storage and backup solutions have revolutionised the university's IT infrastructure, enabling faculty and students to learn and research in a more stable and efficient environment. As the leader in unified data storage, NetApp will continue to strive for IT infrastructure innovation through our advanced solutions," Kho said.
