HID integrates U.ARE.U camera system with Amazon Rekognition

Wed, 5th Jun 2024

HID, a global company specialising in trusted identity and biometric solutions, has announced the integration of its U.ARE.U Camera Identification System with Amazon Rekognition, a cloud-based computer vision service. This collaboration aims to enhance facial analysis and verification across various environments including self-service and point of sale (POS) settings.

The synergy between HID's U.ARE.U camera and Amazon Rekognition is poised to deliver superior results in identity verification processes. HID’s advanced imaging technology effectively captures facial features in diverse light conditions, backgrounds, and expressions, accommodating a wide range of demographics. The camera also incorporates several onboard sensors for built-in liveness detection, ensuring compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) by leveraging its extensive vertical field of view.

Vito Fabbrizio, Managing Director of the Biometrics Business Unit at HID, commented on the collaboration: "This successful integration demonstrates our commitment to innovation and our continuous focus on generating value through our technologies. We are proud to work with Amazon's face recognition technology to deliver peak performance in demanding environments such as self-serve and POS. The ultimate goal is to provide an optimal customer experience without compromising on accuracy and security."

The HID U.ARE.U Camera Identification System now supports several Amazon Rekognition capabilities, enhancing its utility in various applications. Key features include:

Amazon Rekognition Face Detection: This feature predicts attributes like bounding box size, pose, brightness, sharpness, whether eyes are open, whether the mouth is open, and if eyeglasses are worn. These attributes are used to assess face quality.

Amazon Rekognition Face Comparison: This functionality measures the similarity between two faces, aiding in the determination of whether they belong to the same individual.

Amazon Rekognition Face Index and Search: This feature creates a collection of known faces and enables the searching of new user selfies against this existing database.

The integration is particularly beneficial for sectors such as hospitality, healthcare, sports, entertainment, retail, banking, government, and transportation. The ability to deploy this technology in a multitude of scenarios underscores its flexibility and robustness.

Amazon Rekognition, which forms the bedrock of this collaboration, is a fully managed computer vision service provided by Amazon Web Services (AWS). It has been continually refined and expanded since its inception in 2006, supporting a wide range of workloads and industries globally.

HID's U.ARE.U camera complements Amazon Rekognition by capturing high-quality facial images, even in challenging conditions. This is crucial for ensuring both security and convenience in various self-service and POS applications. The built-in liveness detection capability also adds an extra layer of security, preventing fraudulent activities and ensuring that the system can differentiate between a live person and a photograph or video attempt at spoofing.

The combined technology aims to bring significant improvements in customer experience, reducing the friction often associated with identity verification processes while maintaining high standards of accuracy and security. This makes the collaboration between HID and AWS a pivotal development in the field of biometric identification and verification.

This partnership highlights the continuous advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning, underscoring both companies' commitment to leveraging these technologies for practical and impactful applications. By integrating sophisticated biometric solutions with robust cloud-based services, HID and AWS are setting new benchmarks in identity verification and customer experience enhancement.
