DigiCert & Panasonic speed up Matter smart home certification

Today

DigiCert and Panasonic Industry Europe have announced a partnership to support manufacturers in streamlining the security certification process for Matter smart home devices.

The collaboration integrates DigiCert Device Trust Manager with Panasonic's PAN-MaX intelligent manufacturing service to facilitate seamless Matter certification for connected home products. This move is designed to give manufacturers a quicker method for delivering secure products that comply with evolving standards in the growing smart home sector.

The partnership is set against a backdrop of sustained growth in the smart home market, with global revenues estimated to reach USD $147.52 billion in 2025 and a forecast rise to USD $633.20 billion by 2032, representing a compound annual growth rate of 23.1% according to Fortune Business Insights.

Kevin Hilscher, Senior Director, Product Management at DigiCert, said: "DigiCert is a key contributor to Matter and one of the few trusted authorities that can issue Matter device attestation certificates. Through our partnership with Panasonic Industry Europe, customers can now request certificates instantly through a fully automated system, eliminating extra steps and streamlining security. The process helps manufacturers focus on innovation, ensuring that security and Matter certification accelerate business rather than slow it down."

Chetan Joshi, Lead Product Manager at Panasonic Industry Europe, commented: "The smart home revolution requires a foundation of trust to thrive. Panasonic Industry Europe and DigiCert are setting a new standard for trust, where smart home devices aren't just connected, but secure and certified from the moment they're built. By combining Panasonic's innovative PAN-MaX certification service with DigiCert's industry-leading attestation services, we're making sure manufacturers have an effortless path to Matter certification without trading speed for security."

Manufacturers have faced ongoing challenges integrating security and compliance processes into smart device production. Security and certification are often considered late in the manufacturing process, resulting in delays and compliance issues that can be costly for producers. The integration of DigiCert Device Trust Manager and PAN-MaX is designed to address this by automating device attestation certificate (DAC) issuance during manufacturing. Certificates are generated and applied in real time, removing the need for manual steps and helping ensure encryption, identity, and authentication are included from the start.

Through the automated system, smart home devices using Panasonic's wireless modules are made Matter-ready, with authentication embedded from day one. The integration supports faster time-to-market, as the approval process for certificates takes place during production instead of after assembly.

Matter is an interoperability standard developed by members of the Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA), with contributors including DigiCert and Panasonic. It establishes a universal language for smart devices to work across platforms such as Apple Home, Google Home, and Amazon Alexa.

For manufacturers, meeting Matter compliance is considered essential. Each certified device requires a Device Attestation Certificate, which demonstrates the product's eligibility for integration within Matter-enabled ecosystems. These certificates, issued by CSA-approved Product Attestation Authorities such as DigiCert, are necessary for device functionality within Matter networks. A lack of certification can prevent devices from functioning properly and lead to delays in bringing products to market.

The automated integration of security certification during manufacturing is intended to remove existing bottlenecks, giving manufacturers a more efficient route to certification and compliance without requiring additional time or resources once production is underway.
