CloudCasa expands KubeVirt support for integrated backup

Fri, 8th Nov 2024

CloudCasa has announced it will expand its support for KubeVirt, an open-source virtualisation platform that allows the management of virtual machines (VMs) as Kubernetes-native resources.

The integration aims to facilitate the backup and restoration of both VMs and containerised workloads in hybrid environments, thereby improving operational efficiency and flexibility. With this update, CloudCasa solidifies its role as a backup solution for SUSE Harvester and Red Hat OpenShift Virtualization, both utilising KubeVirt technology.

By expanding its feature set to support KubeVirt, CloudCasa enables users to manage VMs with familiar Kubernetes tools and APIs. This provides an alternative for organisations seeking to mitigate rising VMware licensing costs following its acquisition by Broadcom. Additionally, Red Hat OpenShift Virtualization and SUSE Harvester offer frameworks to manage VMs seamlessly over the OpenShift and Rancher ecosystems, respectively.

Ryan Kaw, Vice President of Sales at CloudCasa, commented on the update, "We're seeing a significant need for a unified backup solution in hybrid environments where VMs and containers coexist. By expanding support for KubeVirt, Harvester, and Red Hat OpenShift Virtualization, CloudCasa offers a powerful, all-in-one solution that simplifies backup processes for organisations running these platforms. Our customers can protect all their workloads, whether running in Harvester, OpenShift, or KubeVirt, with a single, easy-to-use platform."

This enhancement to CloudCasa's backup solutions is intended to bolster data protection for organisations while simplifying disaster recovery procedures. The integration aims to ensure business continuity by facilitating data mobility between clusters or clouds, which is crucial for maintaining resilience during unanticipated disruptions.

Overall, CloudCasa by Catalogic is a Kubernetes backup solution providing multi-cloud data protection, disaster recovery, replication, and migration for Kubernetes applications. As a SaaS or self-hosted application, CloudCasa enables multi-cluster and multi-cloud application resiliency and mobility with granular or cluster-level recovery across accounts, regions and even across clouds. CloudCasa is fully compatible with and complementary to Velero, the open-source Kubernetes backup tool that has been downloaded over 500 million times.

CloudCasa is also continually being improved. For instance, in September, Catalogic announced significant enhancements to the CloudCasa platform. These updates focused on advanced backup capabilities, extended Azure support, and comprehensive Amazon Elastic Kubernetes Service (EKS) features, addressing the complex needs of diverse Kubernetes environments.

By delivering the benefits of open source and SaaS management, with no vendor lock-in, CloudCasa addresses management, governance, and compliance requirements for Kubernetes data protection and disaster recovery.

At the time Bob Adair, Head of Product Management for CloudCasa, commented, "Our latest updates to CloudCasa give customers much more flexibility in the types of environments they can protect, migrate, and replicate, and also expand on our already class-leading support for automatic Kubernetes cluster creation."

"We're excited to get these new features into the hands of our users. They further enhance the comprehensive suite of tools provided by CloudCasa that give customers the ability to protect their complex Kubernetes environments, in the datacenter, in the cloud, and at the edge," he said.
